What She Left Behind, 2021

Mixed media textile cloth

In hopes to feel more connected to my mother after she passed, I found myself in her belongings and a lot of memory boxes and photo albums. I came across the term/phrase memento mori (an object kept as a reminder of the inevitability of death). Through that came the retracing and rediscovering of my mother’s archive – the photographs left behind that were stored away and diaries/journals that were for safekeeping. My work attempts to portray and convey the retracing of the likeness of someone who has passed on. My artistic practice and making, as of right now, takes on the form of navigating bereavement through art and the ways in which I can explore grief, loss and mourning of my mother. Taking from last year to this year, I have explored my artistic practice in the form of art therapy which I have also decided on researching and exploring in my research paper. I once again am using the idea of a “therapy/healing cloth”. In this work, I am aware that I am conveying a narrative that is personal and subjective to me however my intention is to speak and portray work vulnerably about a topic and challenge most of us will have to/have already go through in our life’s journey (which I also put forth within my research paper).
